Change N97 product code to get the latest firmware updates

Today we are going to change our product code. This is also known as ‘debranding’, and this will enable us to get the latest firmware updates as and when Nokia releases them. We wont have to wait for our carrier ( vodafone, 3, etc) to approve the updates.

Before we start, we would like to remind you that changing product code may void your warranty. Although you can still go back to your original product code, in case you need to send it to nokia care.

The following procedure has been done successfully by many including me. I am quite confident there wont be a problem, but still you need to be aware of the risks.

Note: We take no responsibility if things dont go as expected. We have used it, and there has been many who have done it successfully. We would try our best to help you in case of any problem.

This is what you need to do.

Before we start, select your new product code. list here.

  1. Create a FULL BACKUP of your phone.
  2. Download Nemesis Service Suite. Install.
  3. Connect your N97 using USB. Close Nokia PC suite.
  4. Open Nemesis Service Suite
  5. Click on the magnifying glass icon ( top right corner )
  6. Click on ‘Phone info’ and then ‘Read’
  7. The product code you now see can be edited. Replace it with the product code you selected earlier . Tick ‘enable’ (right of product code :D ) and then click on ‘write’.
  8. DONE ! you just changed your product code. =) Yeah, its that easy.
  9. Just to check if it has been done correctly, click on the ‘read’ tab .. you will now see your new product code.
  10. Restart.

You are now ready to update to the latest firmware !

Heres something imp.

If at anytime, either after changing product code or after updating to the latest firmware, your phones side lock doesnt work or the hardware stops working; restart.

Even though i dont know a single person who needed this, but still for your info. If your N97 gets bricked, you can do a hard reset. Check our earlier post on how to do a hard reset. And then restore your phone from the backup you have taken in step 1.

New major  N97 firmware update coming up in october. Its got kinetic scrolling and loads of other changes. excited. =)

Big thanks to richardhula and Amir of n97fanatics.com. Have a look at their alternate way of debranding N97. Even though its a lot of steps, but if this doesnt work, you can surely give that a try.

Waiting for your comments :)

i changed my product code to 0575841: RM-505_APAC_HONG KONG white successfully under RM-505 => FW 12.0.024 in nokiausers.net but i software update still says i already have the latest which is 11.0.021. did i pick a wrong code?

    • NokiaN97Blog.Com says:

      @rodkar

you selected the correct product code. nokia software update site says you should now have 12.0.024 ( http://i38.tinypic.com/kaljye.png )

Try restarting your phone. pull it out from the usb .. close the nemesis software and then open nokia software updater. Let me know if that helps.

Hi all, i recently bought a Nokia N97 and came to find out that it’s not compatible with T-Mobile 3 G Netwok. Is this the case for every N97 user on T-Mobile network or i need to do something to get the 3 G ?. Thanks.

  4. @keppie3 says:

Does it also works voor V20 ?

    • aritra_m says:

it should work with every update. product code is nokias way of knowing which part of the world you are in. the firmware updates are mostly released region by region. all you are doing is jumping on to a product code for which the new firmware is released.

      Theres also the debranding point.

  5. @keppie3 says:

Latest available software for Nokia N97, product code 0585162
    Version: 12.0.026

    So I can't update it to V20 ?

    • aritra_m says:

As of now, No. with the existing product code.

My original product code says i cant go beyond 11.0.021 . but i have been on 12.0.024 for a long time now. change the product code, and get the new firmware. i would have done that if i were you.

      =)

  6. @keppie3 says:

    0570817: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black i've used this one.
And it' s now updating! yeeah.
Is it dangerous, because I live in the Neterlands?

  7. Umesh says:

Hi, am from Oman. Thanks for the cool software. My problem is totally different. I got an unbranded n97 which i purchased recently with firmware 12.0.026, when i tried to update the firmware yesterday at around 12:30pm it was showing the update is available for your phone..but i had to cancel as our office network get disconnects too often..i thought, will try from my home, but when i got home at night and tried its showing the my phone already got the latest firmware which is 12.0.026 ..I did both soft and hard reset..still its not working..I have no idea what to do now.

Now the next problem..i used this software to change the product code and changed to “0570817: RM-505_EMEA_EURO_QW1 Black” and tried again to update, but still its showing, i got the latest firmware which is 12.0.026. If anyone knows the real reason behind this pls advice me how to update my firmware.

    Thanks in advance.

  8. Umesh says:

Ok guys, I changed the product code again with a UK one. but the problem now is, the firmware is available but its for the White N97 and mine is Black so am little confused here. Is there any problem if I update the firmware of my Black N97 with a firmware of White N97???

pls reply as soon as possilbe

    Thanks in advance.

    • Hello umesh,

Dont think there should be any difference between the white and the black version. If you dont get a product code for black n97 .. go ahead with the white v20 version.

This m telling from my knowledge and experience, m not 100% sure.

IWould recommend going through the product code list again, m sure you would get one for the black version. =)

Umesh, I am curious to know if it worked for you. Thanks.

Hi there help please, changed my product to 0570817 updated fine to 2.0 firmware.

BUT now it doesn't Vodaphone Live when I try to connect to internet so I can't use my internet when away from wifi…. Any help pleeease :'(

    • aritra_m says:

from what i understand you need specific settings which you download from vodafone in order to get access to vodafone live.

i use vodafone live as well, and even though my settings didnt go. but thats how it works.

call the vodafone guys and check out the instructions to download vodafone live settings on your n97. that should work.

    • rob says:

I had a similar problem where i could get on the web via an internet browser like the defult one or opera but when opening a web page it would ask for a username and password, but when i refreshed it would load which got annoying. also my app like google maps (ovi map suck), the inbuilt e-mail, nokia mail etc just would connect to the internet and i couldn't change the settings of internet connectivity/destination at all.

I decided to do a hard reset and this worked :)

  13. Amin says:

    Hi all

I am looking to change the country code because N America firmware does not allow the shutter sound to be turned off. I have done this with my N95 and was wondering if I would have any issues installing the UK firmware on the N97.

    • Umesh says:

      Hi Amin,
I dont think there will be any problems if u install the UK firmware. Only thing is that u wil get some extra 4 Europian languages in your phone, but that doesn't slow down ur phone. so I wish u all the best.

      regards
      Umesh

      • Amin says:

That is brilliant.. Will be getting the phone in the next day or so. Just doing my research ahead of time. Thanks.

  14. Airic says:

    hey guys, i need help…
in Canada, they do not allow the update for the n97 firmware so i cannot upgrade it to 2.0
if i change the product code and enter in a European code, will it work?
or any ideas that i can update without changing the code?

    • aritra_m says:

if the update isnt out for canada then changing the product code is the only way to get the latest firmware. its really easy to change the product code. .. but always keep the original product code handy .. incase you need to go back to it. hope it works for you . let us know. :)

    • Umesh says:

      Hi Airic,
You have to change the product code to update the firmware. Change to the original product code after updating the firmware. btw, i dont have any ideas for updating the firmware without changing the code.

      anyways, all the best.

    Hi all,
Just updated my blackie again with the new firmware…yes, i changed the product code with a UK version and updated it…then changed back to original product code….without any problems.

Yesterday, when i checked there was a new update available for my original product code….so simply i updated it with the new one…from 20.0.017 to 20.0.027 and i dont see any difference other than the Arabic language is back and some European language is gone…

I hope it wont do any harm to my Blackie..

Try restarting and then doing it agai, if you havent done it yet.

Last resort would be a hard reset. Try another product code, if theres a spcific problem with this one.
