Nokia updated Ovi Store to v1.07(12), the earlier one was v1.06(18). You can now see more applications of a single category without changing pages, the ‘load more items’ section keeps you in the same page but extends the application list. Niceee!

ABBYY FotoTranslate is a new application to instantly translate foreign words on your N97 & Mini by using the built-in camera.

It combines optical character recognition (OCR) technology for converting images of words into text and mobile dictionary software. FotoTranslate delivers swift and accurate translation of words without the need for manual input of text, Internet connection, cellular signal, or access to any external language resources.

It allows the user to enter a word by pressing only one button once (to take a picture of the word). The user simply takes a photo of the text with their mobile camera. The use of high-quality ABBYY OCR technology greatly reduces the risk of input errors.

The application does not require the mobile device to be connected to the Internet or to the mobile network. The user does not use up traffic and can freely use it in roaming. All the application components are installed on the device itself, which saves time and money.

ABBYY FotoTranslate uses general-purpose dictionaries licensed from well-known authors and publishers, such as Oxford and Compact Verlag.

The application supports 8 popular European languages (English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian) and translates words in 30 directions in total.

For some of the words audio is available. Ability to hear words pronounced by voice-over professionals is also a useful feature.

If a word has been recognized but ambiguity remains (e.g. only part of the word has been photographed), the user is presented with a choice of several suggestions. User can also simply correct the word by hand. User interface is available in English, German and Russia.

Google released a new update for Google Maps – v4.1. Has few changes, including the big one – Voice Search!

Search by voice lets you easily search for anything by simply speaking your search terms instead of typing them. Just open Google Maps, press your phone’s “call” button, and clearly speak your search term like “Park Plaza.” Search by voice works with all the kinds of searches Google Maps for mobile already supports, including places, addresses (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway), specific businesses (The French Laundry), or types of businesses (sushi restaurants new york).

Minor firmware update 21.0.102 for N97

Google buzz on N97

Google buzz was released last nite. Its a social media tool which combines twitter, flickr, rss n others.

As of now, you only get the Google buzz layer on Google maps. But buzz.google.com is noted as “coming soon” to the Nokia N97 & Mini.

N97 firmware update V21 is releasing tomorrow [1st feb 2010]. Heres the changelog.

The software contains many fixes and improvements on the earlier releases including:

Installing Ovi Maps on N97

Official support for Ovi Maps on N97 will be coming on 28th Jan 2010. But you can get it working on your N97 right now! Heres how.

Step 1. Download the Ovi Maps .sis file from http://nokia.com/maps/download/ Select phone as Nokia N97 Mini. Click on the square area from the pic below.

Step 2. Copy the Ovi Maps .sisx file to your N97. And using File Manager on your mobile, open the Maps .sisx to install.

Everything else is as per instructions.

So now you have Ovi Maps running on your N97 before its supported officially. Word of caution here, this is not recommended. Memory space on your C drive after install will go down. New firmware and official support for Ovi Maps will be coming on 28th Jan, most probably.

Its breaking news right now. Ovi Maps will provide free navigation. Its available for download on the N97 Mini right now. But it wont be working on the original N97 (as of now) since a minimum of 20mb is required in the C drive for the ovi maps installer to start working. Original N97’s support will be added in a weeks time. V2.1 firmware release also scheduled for next week ..
