Nokia released new firmwares for N97 [ v22.0.110] and N97 Mini [ v12.0.110 ]. You can get it OTA [over the air] and also via Nokia Software Updater.

Changelog:

Maps 3.3 with free Navigation built-in
Nokia Messaging stub built-in
Default screen brightness raised to 75%
Default theme now the jet black ‘Nseries 2′, giving longer battery life than the previous ‘Nseries 3′
RAM optimisations
Miscellaneous bug fixes

Update – Ovi Store v1.07(12)

Nokia updated Ovi Store to v1.07(12), the earlier one was v1.06(18). You can now see more applications of a single category without changing pages, the ‘load more items’ section keeps you in the same page but extends the application list. Niceee!

You can update to the latest version by opening the Ovi Store client in your N97 & N97 Mini.

Nokia Bots is a collection of add-ons that autonomously learn your personal preferences, and improve user experience with new, customized features and tricks. These add-ons, or Bots, observe how the phone is being used and automatically configure and activate themselves, if customization seems relevant.

The Bots ‘live’ within a single homescreen widget, where their status, messages and suggestions are presented to you. Currently, four Bots are included:

Profile Bot

Do you ever forget to silence the phone for meetings? Or when the meeting ends, forget to switch back to normal profile, and miss calls? Profile Bot is here to help. Alarm Bot

Battery Bot

Battery Bot observes your battery status. In case the battery is likely to drain while you sleep, it reminds you in advance to connect the charger. Otherwise you might wake up too early because of “battery low” alerts, or too late if it drains before wake-up alarm.

N97 Mini gets new firmware – V11.0.045

Earlier today N97 got the much anticipated V21 firmware update. Now, N97 Mini users can also update firmware to the all new V11.0.045.

The software contains many fixes and improvements over v10 firmware including:

More free RAM after booting (around 6MB more)
Improved call reliability
Browser improvements
Music player improvements
Cleaner default (black) theme
Improved image and video stability

New firmware V21 for N97 is available now on Nokia Software Updater. Its 127 mb in size.

Changes according to Changelog:

Improved call reliability
Smooth touch screen scrolling
Browser improvements
Music player improvements
Improved image and video stability

Heres what i noticed after the update: Theres a new black theme. Its simple yet slick. Noticed a massive improvement in the ‘Photos’ section. Its super smooth now. Some tweaks in browser, also in the camera interface.

Installing Ovi Maps on N97

Official support for Ovi Maps on N97 will be coming on 28th Jan 2010. But you can get it working on your N97 right now! Heres how.

Step 1. Download the Ovi Maps .sis file from http://nokia.com/maps/download/ Select phone as Nokia N97 Mini. Click on the square area from the pic below.

Step 2. Copy the Ovi Maps .sisx file to your N97. And using File Manager on your mobile, open the Maps .sisx to install.

Everything else is as per instructions.

So now you have Ovi Maps running on your N97 before its supported officially. Word of caution here, this is not recommended. Memory space on your C drive after install will go down. New firmware and official support for Ovi Maps will be coming on 28th Jan, most probably.

Its breaking news right now. Ovi Maps will provide free navigation. Its available for download on the N97 Mini right now. But it wont be working on the original N97 (as of now) since a minimum of 20mb is required in the C drive for the ovi maps installer to start working. Original N97’s support will be added in a weeks time. V2.1 firmware release also scheduled for next week ..

Update 2: You can install Ovi Maps on N97 right now. Not officially supported though.

N97 update: Memory Reorganiser 1.0

Theres a new software update for N97 – Memory Reorganiser 1.0. Download it from Menu -> Applications -> Software Update. You need to run Memory reorganiser from Applications. It will auto remove itself after the first run.

I havent noticed any major improvement. To be fair to nokia, i dont run too many apps at one time. Guess others will notice the change. Let us know how you feel about the new update.
