Change N97 product code to get the latest firmware updates

September 19th, 2009

Today we are going to change our product code. This is also known as ‘debranding’, and this will enable us to get the latest firmware updates as and when Nokia releases them. We wont have to wait for our carrier ( vodafone, 3, etc) to approve the updates.

Before we start, we would like to remind you that changing product code may void your warranty. Although you can still go back to your original product code, in case you need to send it to nokia care.

The following procedure has been done successfully by many including me. I am quite confident there wont be a problem, but still you need to be aware of the risks.

Note: We take no responsibility if things dont go as expected. We have used it, and there has been many who have done it successfully. We would try our best to help you in case of any problem.

This is what you need to do.

How To: Check for firmware updates #N97

August 27th, 2009

One thing which am sure you must have faced with the release of new firmware updates is its unavailability in many parts of this planet. Apparently its not Nokias fault that everyone doesnt get the firmware update at the same time.

From Nokia FAQ:

Please note that your mobile service provider, operator, or carrier may not have approved the latest Nokia device firmware available.

Nokia produces many different variants of each product (for different countries and languages) and not all variants have the latest Nokia device firmware. It is our priority to update all variants as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any delay. New software may become available at a later date, however, so please check back soon.

The best thing you can do is go to Nokia Softwate Update Checker and check for your device specific updates. Mostly you will get the new firmware after 7-10 days of its release.

How To: Hard reset N97

August 24th, 2009

The most imp thing before hard reseting your N97 : Take a full backup.

The hard reset completely erases everything you have on the internal memory (including settings), but doesnt touch anything on the mass memory. So if you want to format your mass memory, go to Applications -> Office -> File Manager then enter your mass memory. Select Options->Format Mass Memory.

Switch off your N97 and press these four buttons together for few seconds (till you get a white screen on your phone). If done correctly, the first screen you will get is ‘Select your country’.

Power Button + Space Bar + Caps Shift Bar + Delete button
